Top 5 Sustainable Restaurants in Vancouver

I love to cook wholesome meals at home and I also love to eat out. It's important to choose sustainable restaurants that support local farmers and use minimal packaging and strive to reduce waste. Here's a list of my top 5 eco-friendly restaurants in Vancouver:

1. Shanti's Curries

This is my favourite go to spot when I'm craving something quick and flavourful.  It's located on Main & King Edward in the Riley Park neighbourhood. They use quality ingredients; organic, non-GMO, free range & whole foods in their Southern Indian dishes. They make everything from scratch in their kitchen in order to reduce packaging. They are a great zero waste spot, as I always get greeted with a smile when I bring my own jars to fill up. If you go at the end of the night, in order to reduce food waste they give away any extra rice that they would normally throw out. The staff are great and all the dishes are amazing, I often have a hard time deciding. - vegetarian & meat options available.

2. Exile Bistro

This little gem located in the heart of the West End at Bute & Davie was founded by Vanessa Bourget, certified herbalist and nutritionist, the holistic approach to dining really comes through in the thoughtfulness behind all the dishes and cocktails. They offer vegan and meat dishes, using native British Columbian herbs and underproduced meat from local farms. If you're looking for a sustainable Pacific Northwest experience, I give this place 5 stars, everything I've had has been satisfying, inventive and delicious.

Forage, also located in the West End, on Robson & Jervis, is cutting edge for it's zero waste efforts. Not only do they serve up all local food and drink, they also put an emphasis on reducing waste, energy & water consumption through partnerships with Oceanwise, BC hydro and the Greentable Network. The executive chef, Chris Whittaker is an advocate for eco-friendly dining, and has appeared on numerous panels discussing "greening the restaurant industry." A true West Coast dining experience that's affordable and satisfying.

4. The Acorn

An exceptional vegetarian restaurant located on the corner of Main & 24th. This elegant and intimate spot adapts to the change of the seasons keeping the rotating menu fresh and interesting. They also offer a daily harvest dish which features different local farms. Each dish is artistic and well composed, this mindfulness also transfers over to their cocktails, many of which feature locals Vancouver distilleries, such as Odd Society Spirits. By far one of my favourite spots in the city; the dishes are filling and creative.

5. The Refinery

This is a great cocktail bar if you're downtown Vancouver in the Granville Entertainment District. This place not only puts sustainability at the forefront of their food and cocktail program but had the environment in mind when designing their entire space. From the back of house to the decor, the Refinery uses energy efficient equipment in the kitchen and built their space using sustainable furniture and finishings and LED lighting. These eco-friendly initiatives are great ways to reduce our environmental footprint.
