Simple Non-Toxic Air Fresheners You Can Make At Home

It's nice to walk into a home that has a pleasant, clean fragrance. Most commercial air fresheners on the market today are killing us. There are endless amounts of unregulated toxic chemicals in these products and can lead to long-term health consequences. The whole cleaning industry is self regulated, and this means there's no regulation. These companies don't need permission from anyone before releasing their products.

Most of those nice scents we often find in toxic air fresheners contain:

-volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

These chemicals lead to cancer, cause hormonal abnormalities, asthma, migraines, birth defects and reproductive problems. Even products labelled as "all-natural" or "unscented" are laced with strong chemical fragrances to mask unpleasant odours.

Instead of these harmful air fresheners, use herbs and pure essential oils. Open your windows for at least several minutes everyday.

Here are two of my favourite non-toxic, eco-friendly air freshener recipes:

1 teaspoon gin/vodka
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
2 cups of water

1 teaspoon gin/vodka
10 drops fir needle essential oil (I sometimes substitute pine essential oil)
10 drops juniper essential oil
10 drops sandalwood essential oil
2 cups of water

Combine the gin/vodka and the essential oils into a reusable spray bottle. Close and shake. Add the water and shake again. Spray into the air, and try to keep clear of wood surfaces and fabrics to prevent any staining.

-If you have a fireplace, I recommend adding a drop or two of essential oil on the logs that you add to the fire.

-add a few slices of lemon or orange to a pot with 2-3 cups of water and let it simmer for 20-45 minutes uncovered. If you prefer a spicy fragrance you can add cloves or cinnamon. For a fresher scent add a few sprigs of rosemary.

-make little bags of herbs and place them around the room
