If you're in Berlin check out this completely zero waste grocery store. You will not find any plastic in this supermarket. It's like a waste free dream...no disposable packaging, no plastic, no bags of any kind - unless they are made to be reused. And over 400 products, which include fruit, grains, yogurt, cosmetics, detergents - all unpackaged. The stores name says it all Original Unverpackt (Original Unpackaged) This is the first supermarket of its kind in Germany which opened its doors in September 2014.
I haven't had the opportunity to check it out but I've had a couple friends who have and they said it's small but growing and it fulfilled many of their zero waste needs while travelling. Some of the products are more expensive but that's due to the fact the store carries predominantly organic. They also sell products largely from local suppliers, cutting down on transportation and pollution. If you're not travelling with your own reusable containers the store sells a range of containers for you to use.
I almost want to go to Berlin just to check out this place. An amazing concept put into action by two young women, Sara Wolf and Milena Glimbovski who wanted to put an end to over packaging and wastefulness in the food and retail industry. It shows that creating a zero waste business can be accomplished! Stores like this make me happy (:
